I watched the movie a long time ago with my Mom and we both loved it so I was really excited when I bought the book. And what a disappointment that was!!!! The book is nothing like the movie, not even close. The story is boring, long winded, almost like a collection of short stories strung together and I do not care for the author's style of writing. I usually finish a book no matter how bad but I gave up at about the halfway point after the scene where an "unmanageable" bull was tied up, all 4 legs bound and a jaguar chewed off one of his legs during the night. I cannot deal with such animal abuse especially since this is supposed to be a true story. I cringed with all the descriptions of safaris and shooting of lions and what have you and I read through it all but this scene was too much. I realize that this happened almost 100 years ago but it does not make it more palatable or ok.I am sorry that I wasted several hours getting that far that I could have spent reading something enjoyable.
Out of Africa is more or less a classic, so I am glad that I've read it. As most people would say, it's not like the movie. It is something else entirely. That's great. The movie is not supposed to BE the book. They are two separate entities.As a historian, I was especially enthralled with the chance to sit inside the head of an intelligent, well-meaning white colonial in the early 20th century. This book did more than anything I've ever read to get a close look at the attitudes of those who attempted to dominate Africa,, after its initial conquests. The picture is not a pretty one. For example, the author has no problem using the term "squatters" to refer to those "natives" who live on HER land, though the land had been theirs for thousands of years. The colonials who were her friends were not the initial conquerors; they did not come in with guns or engage directly in the slave trade, yet they still maintained a view that they had a perfect right to dominate. Ah, I said to myself, this really is colonialism. I see it so much ore clearly now, see the long term, harmful, painful effects. Amazing.
